CityYouth Ministries Grant Targets Graduation Rates Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation Approves Support for College Readiness Program
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (June 22, 2010) – The Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation Board of Directors voted in June to provide a $150,000 grant to CityYouth Ministries, Inc. to support its efforts to increase the high school graduation and college going rates of young men in the North Jonesboro neighborhood of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
CityYouth, a 10-year-old community-based organization, works with youth in North Jonesboro providing a variety of educational, social, and spiritual supports. The new funding will allow them to expand the component of their program that focuses specifically on young men.
"Young men in our community have higher dropout rates and much lower college-going rates than the general population," said Rennell Woods, Executive Director. "With support from the Foundation, we are going to strengthen the pipeline from high school to college and beyond by helping these young men develop stronger academic skills and connecting them directly to higher education through partnerships with Arkansas State University in Jonesboro and other educational institutions."
CityYouth will also become a participant in the Marginalized Males Workforce and Education Consortium (MMWEC), facilitated by the Foundation, which focuses on increasing retention and graduation rates for marginalized males in the state of Arkansas.
"CityYouth will be a great addition to the MMWEC." said Dr. Sherece West, President and CEO of the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. "Their work, in partnership with other community organizations and institutions of higher education around the state will help build a framework for state focused ‘best practices’ specific to the issue of marginalized males and higher education."
