Increase Graduation Rates
The second of the Moving the Needle (MTN) strategic plan goals is to
Increase high school, vocational, and college graduation rates in the state.
Strategy 1: Fund initiatives that create a culture of high aspiration and educational achievement. MORE
Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund provides critical support to low-income single parents who have made the decision to continue their education. ASPSF works in communities across the state to raise local resources that go directly to help propel these inspiring students from poverty to prosperity.
Complete College America was established in 2009 to focus on dramatically increasing the nation’s college completion rate through state policy change and to build consensus for change among state leaders, higher education, and the national education policy community to close attainment gaps for traditionally underrepresented populations. Arkansas joined the Alliance of States in March 2010.
Strategy 2: Fund initiatives that aim to reduce the achievement gap, dropout rates, and levels of post-secondary remediation. MORE
Achieving the Dream is a national initiative supported at four Arkansas two-year colleges by WRF that focuses on keeping hard-to-retain students in school. ATD focuses on the importance of data, professional development for instructors, and the need for a shift to a more student-centered culture.
Strategy 3: Continue encouraging students, especially students of color, to pursue STEM education and careers. MORE
The Arkansas Science and Technology Authority has a variety of WRF-supported efforts to increase opportunities for STEM education in Arkansas’s schools. ASTA’s teacher education programs, web-based curricula, and mini-grant programs focus on increasing math and science proficiency in the state.
Strategy 4: Support campaigns with specific goals related to creating a culture of high aspiration and educational achievement in Arkansas. MORE
WRF supports the Arkansas Department of Higher Education’s efforts to encourage college attendance for the state’s high school students. A radio, print, and web-based ad campaign has netted hundreds of inquiries and provided a clearer path for college-bound students.
