WHAT WE’RE THINKING ABOUT
World-renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, challenges us to move beyond “what has always been” to see the truths and realms of possibility we have never seen before. Adichie invites the audience of her TEDtalk to journey with her as she questions the danger of a single story. She posits that “the single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.”

Her presentation deals with how people see other people in their daily interactions. But, when we challenge ourselves to view this mantra with an equity lens, we are compelled to ask, “How do we see our beloved state of Arkansas?”

WHY THIS MATTERS TO US
For too long, Arkansans have believed a single story of insufficiency and satisfaction with the status quo. With AR Equity 2025, the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation (WRF) envisions an Arkansas in which all Arkansans have jobs that pay a livable wage, a quality education, and the chance to thrive and prosper. To get there, we are clear that it is time for different stories. We should all be telling the true stories of community wealth, access to resources and capital, and residents dedicated to dismantling legacies of bias and unfairness.

WHAT WE ARE DOING
WRF is committed to telling those unheard stories. We understand that inclusive narratives and truth-telling are important tools in our relentless pursuit of equity. This fall, WRF will host a virtual Story Slam for Equity to highlight successes in inspirational communities and illuminate the existing structures that make it easy to continue believing one story about Arkansas.
